Army hockey player recovers after serious neck injury from skating

Army hockey player Eric Huss suffered a serious injury from an involuntary skate to the neck in a game against Sacred Heart on Thursday.

Huss received a skate to the neck in the second period of a 5-0 defeat of the armyaccording to The Associated Press.

Coach Rachel Leahy rushed into action, controlling Huss’s bleeding, and Army hockey coach Brian Riley praised her for acting quickly.

“A terrible tragedy was averted tonight thanks to the swift action of our trainer and medical staff who were in the arena tonight,” Riley posted on Twitter Thursday night. “Grateful that our player is well thanks to them.”

The Army hockey team posted an update on Twitter Friday morning following Huss’s successful surgery.

“Last night, Eric Huss suffered an unintentional skid injury to his neck. He was transported after a pivotal response from our coach, Rachel Leahy,” the post reads.

“Eric underwent successful surgery to repair a severe laceration to his neck and will return to West Point today. Guerrero.”

Huss is a junior from Dallas, Texas, and played for the Lone Star Brahmas of the North American Hockey League for two seasons.

The forward has appeared in 31 games for Army Hockey during his three-year career. scoring four goals in 22 shots.
